Design for Manufacturability Lemonader Redesign
The Salton LM8 Lemonader allows users to enjoy fresh squeezed, healthy lemonade without calling upon an extreme amount of manual labor. Our motivation to revise this product stemmed from the evidence that many consumers were concerned with their safety when operating the machinery due to the fact that scorching steam posed a threat. The steam vents on the lid of the sugar chamber have been enlarged in addition to the incorporation of an o-ring to the boundaries of that particular chamber to ensure that the steam remains in the designated region. This factor also will assist in the complete dissolving of the sugar to result in sweeter lemonade. The slots on the reamer have been expanded so as to prevent the accumulation of pulp and to aid in the cleaning process. Incorporating snap-fits into our redesign of the Lemonader not only decreased cost but it also made the assembly process less complicated by reducing the number of parts. This redesign was developed by Chris Gold, Kathy Ho, Deanna McGrath, and Evita Nedelkoska in Winter 2004, instructors: Prof. Sridhar Kota, Mentor Dr. Donald Malen, and Teaching Assistant Kerr-Jia Lu.
