Functional Decomposition

A Functional Diagram standardizes the components of the system, helping capture various functions that the system has to perform. It tells "what to accomplish" while a Part Diagram tells "how to accomplish", which can be created alongside the Functional Diagram.

Example

Example was taken from the Umbrella project.

Concept Selection Matrix (Pugh Chart)

The Pugh Chart helps sort and rank design ideas, leading to the generation of newer concepts.

Example

Example was taken from the Paintball Marker project.

Quality Function Development

The Quality Function Deployment (QFD) charts allow the customer requirements to be reflected throughout the product development process. Customer requirements are transferred to  Quality (Engineering) Characteristics, in the next QFD chart the Quality Characteristics are transferred to Part Characteristics, then Part Characteristics to Process Parameters, and lastly Process Parameters to Production Planning.

Example

Example was taken from the Blender project.
